Christmas Tree Farm Minis: What to Expect (and Why I Love Them!)
There’s something about Christmas tree farm sessions that officially kicks off the holiday season for me. The rows of trees (and the smell!), crisp air, and cozy layers make these some of my favorite sessions of the year!
If you’ve never booked a Christmas Tree Farm Mini before, you might be wondering what the experience is actually like. From how the session flows and what to wear, here’s a little peek at what you can expect when you join me at the tree farm.
1. They're quick - but they don't have to feel rushed
Christmas Tree Farm Minis are intentionally short and sweet. We don’t need an hour to capture a beautiful variety of images. I promise that we will get the Christmas card shot ... and then some!
2. You don't need to know what to do—that's my job
One of the most common things I hear from clients is, “We’re awkward in photos.” I’ll give you plenty of direction throughout the session. I use a combination of guided posing and prompts to create images that feel natural while still making sure everyone looks their best.
3. Your kids don't need to stand still and say “cheese”
Mini sessions move quickly, so they work best for kids who can take a little direction and move along with me—but that doesn’t mean I expect them to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera for 15 minutes. I try to keep things moving and interactive. Walking through the trees, snuggling together, and other simple prompts give kids something to do rather than asking them to stand still and say "cheese". Mixing in movement and interaction helps keep kids engaged and makes the session feel a lot less like a chore.
4. Getting everyone dressed doesn’t have to be complicated
Wardrobe selection can easily feel like the most stressful part of planning family photos. I always recommend coordinating rather than matching. Layers, texture and warm neutral or muted tones photograph beautifully against the trees. You don't have to start from scratch - I provide styling guidance to help you pull everything together, including curated shopping recommendations if you need a little inspiration.
5. More than just a Christmas card photo
Yes, Christmas Tree Farm Minis make really good Christmas card photos. But I also want you to walk away with photographs you'll want to keep long after the cards have been mailed. The goal is to create images that feel festive now, but that you’ll still love displaying and looking back on all year long.
I offer these sessions every year and they've become one of my favorite holiday traditions. I get to see families I've photographed for years, and watch how much their kids grow. I have the privilege of meeting new families every year and I get to spend a day surrounded by Christmas trees. It's hard not to get into the holiday spirit!
